Building Financial Capacity: Fitter Finance

Community Action Hampshire: Beat the Squeeze - Survive and Thrive in the Crunch

Does your organisation need support to improve financial management, accounting and budgeting?

The Fitter Finance Project funded by Capacitybuilders has produced an easy-to-use online 'community accountancy' toolkit for front-line groups and Community Development Workers.

Based on the needs of front-line groups this tookit provides a simple and easily understandable explanation of the basic principles needed to manage the financial aspects of a voluntary and community organisation.  It includes a glossary of specialist terms and an appendix of blank spreadsheets that can be downloaded and used.

The project which ended in June 2008 has also

  • provided ‘community accountancy’ related training, mentoring, support and advice for Hampshire’s voluntary sector support bodies (including CVSs) that will enable them to cascade good practice information to local frontline organisations
  • provided a pilot of training need assessment (TNA) on finance for frontline voluntary and community organisations
  • developed a training and development plan in an appropriate and cost effective manner meeting the financial development & training needs of frontline organisations in those pilot areas of Winchester and Basingstoke where Training Needs Analyses (TNAs) have been conducted;
  • developed a network of voluntary sector professionals with key community accountancy skills
  • assessed the longer term viability of providing community accountancy services to frontline groups, to include basic financial management and independent examination of accounts through the ‘professionals’ network
